The computerlab is a central facility of the Faculty of Mathematics. It provides the whole faculty with computers and computing services, including the maintenance of the underlying server infrastructure. At present, we administer some 300 clients and 50 servers, and run important services like the faculty website.

13.04.2011 Problems with the Acroread Plugin for Firefox

The current version of the acroread plugin for firefox shows sometimes an empty or corrupted page. Often, a reload helps, but not always. If you are hit by the problem, you can configure firefox so that it uses an external viewer for PDF files, such as acroread (this way it works). Go to Edit->Preferences->Applications, and at the entry "PDF Document" (further down the list) select "Use Adobe Reader".

05.11.2010 Migration of IMAP server

In the night from 13./14. November the IMAP server mailstore has been migrated to a new system. At the same time, the mail access policy has been modified, which may require a change in the configuration of your mail program:

• mail access via IMAP requires an encrypted connection using the STARTTLS (or TLS) protocol on port 143. Unencrypted access is no longer possible, and also the SSL (or SSL/TLS) protocol using port 993 is no longer supported.
• mail access via POP3 protocol is no longer supported. If you were using POP3, please switch to IMAP. In thunderbird, you can easily add a new IMAP account, and keep the old one als archive for mails already downloaded.

If you have problems accessing your mail, please check the configuration of your mail client by comparing it to this reference configuration.

Possible Problems

It may happen that thunderbird garbles the index of a folder, so that, e.g., mails may be missing in the index. This is only the local index of thunderbird. You can rebuild it by right-clicking on the folder, and then chose Properties -> General Information -> Rebuild Index (in German: Eigenschaften -> Allgemein -> Reparieren). If there are many mails in the folder, this can take a while.
