Bielefeld: Nearby
Airports
Bielefeld does not have an airport itself, but it has good
train connections to nearby airports. Travel times and train
frequencies given below refer to day-time during the week; there
are fewer connections at night. Complete train schedules are
available online from the Deutsche Bahn
AG. The closest major airports are Duesseldorf and Hannover
(which are also the most convenient ones). Most flights from the
US will go through Frankfurt. For city locations and distances
refer to the map.
- Duesseldorf: Trains from the airport
(lower level) to Duesseldorf main station (Duesseldorf
Hbf) leave every 20 minutes and take 20 minutes. From the
main station of Duesseldorf, there are fast trains (IC,
EC, ICE) to Bielefeld Hbf (every hour; takes about 100
minutes).Sometimes one has to change trains in Dortmund
(same platform, just opposite).
- Hannover: A non-stop bus from the
airport to Hannover main train station
(Hannover Hbf) runs every 20 minutes and takes 20 minutes
(provided there is no traffic jam). From the main
station, there are fast trains (IC, EC, ICE) to Bielefeld
main station (at least once every hour; takes 50
minutes).
- Frankfurt/Main: There are fast train
connections directly from the airport (lower level) to
Bielefeld main station, either via Dortmund or via
Hannover (every hour; takes about 4 hours).
- There are two smaller airports closer to Bielefeld, Paderborn
(at 55 km) and Muenster-Osnabrueck
(at 120 km). However, both airports offer few
connections, and there is only poor public transportation
to Bielefeld.
