The Faculty of Mathematics offers a wide variety of courses. It has Bachelor, Master, and PhD programs in mathematics as well as in mathematical education. There is also a program focusing on mathematical finance jointly offered with the Faculty of Economics. This way, the faculty caters to the different needs of students, be they interested in research or aiming for a career in teaching or in some other profession.
A large number of teaching assistants (usually advanced students or graduate students) provide individual mentoring for students and run sessions associated to the larger courses offered at the faculty. The number of students per session is kept small so that there is enough time for scientific discussion and questions. We think that this is the foundation of any good mathematical education. Furthermore, the "Lernzentrum" provides a very good and unique opportunity for the students to learn. It was created several years ago by the faculty in collaboration with representatives of the students. The "Lernzentrum" offers a place where students can work and learn together. From time to time they are joined by graduate students or postdocs which has enhanced the success of this project. Further information concerning this project can be obtained at the Study Advisory Services of the faculty and the university.
The Faculty of Mathematics also participates in the ERASMUS program of the European Union. Within the scope of this program, students from Bielefeld can study abroad (usually for one term). In return, foreign students spend some time at Bielefeld University. For more information, see the ERASMUS page of the faculty.
