Interaction between Ring Theory and Representation Theory
Theme. In the last twenty years, general ring theory and the
representation theory of algebras have grown as two separate subjects
but with many parallel ideas which often are hidden.
In general ring theory, the relationship
between the category of all modules and the subcategory of all finitely
presented ones is of great importance (after all, every module can be written
as a direct limit of finitely presented ones, so one may consider the
category of all modules as a sort of completion of the category of the
finitely presented ones). Of particular importance are the
algebraically compact (= pure injective) modules. Recent advances in
the representation theory of algebras also focus attention on this class of
modules. The aim of the conference is to outline
the use of representations in ring theory, or more generally,
in different areas of algebra. The use of representation theory in algebra
has to be seen as a corner-stone of the development of a new broad topic, the
noncommutative algebraic geometry.
The conference will last 6 days (Monday - Saturday). It will be
organized in plenum sessions (survey lectures, long lectures and
"perspective" sessions) and parallel sessions (for short communications).
Survey talks are conceived as a way of introducing young
researchers to the methods and open problems in the area. Each of these invited
survey lectures will consist of two 50 minutes talks in order to move in a
reasonable pace. The duration of the
remaining long lectures will also be 50 minutes, short
communications will last 20 minutes.
Between the lectures there should be sufficient time for remarks and informal
discussions. Two plenum sessions will be devoted
to discuss the perspectives and new directions in the use of modules in
different parts of algebras. In this way, also young researchers should
get familiar with the short and long term directions of the subject;
these sessions are moderated by invited keynote speakers.
