Goro Azumaya (1920 - )

His supervisor in the University of Tokyou was Sy\^{o}kiti (= Shokichi) Iyanaga.
After studying Number Theory under Teiji Takagi, he advanced the study
on ring theory at the University of Nagoya, the University of Nagoya and
the University of Hokkaido, and did remarkable works such as
Azumaya algebras, Krull-Remak-Schmidt-Azumaya theorem,
Azumaya-Morita duality theorem and so on.
When he was a professor at the University of Hokkaido,
he went to the USA.
Finally he went into retirement at the University of Illinois
and became an Emeritus Professor there.
He always insists that the class field theory is the best theory
among mathematics, and obtained a simplified proof using ring theory.
He also insists that ring theory is an important field in algebra.
 
Azumaya won the price called "Chunichi Bunkashou" (Prize of Culture in 
the Middle Area of Japan) together with Tadasi Nakayama in 1947.
