DjVu - A Suitable Format for the DML

DjVu is an Image Compression Technique, a Document Format, and a Software Platform for Delivering Document Images over the Internet that fulfills the following requirements:

• Small File Sizes, therefore fast Downloading

• Efficient Browsing by Random Access to Single Pages;
  e.g., one can look at page 50 without having to download all preceeding 49 pages.

• Addition of Metadata and other Annotations

• Searchability Within Ordinary Text

• Linking to Other Digital Articles, e.g., with Reviews in MR or ZBL.

• DjVu is described in a Public Specification [ DjVu, 0.2 MB | pdf, 1.6 MB | PS, 2.3 MB ] and is
  Independent of Any Specific Hardware or Operating System

• Coding and decoding algorithms are clearly written in publicly available C++ code,
  licensed under the GNU General Public License.

• DjVu is Compatible with Practically All Other Formats in use so far,
  like DVI, Postscript, PDF, TIFF JPEG, GIF.
