Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel was not just a mathematician; he was a visionary whose work reshaped the landscape of modern mathematics, including:

  • Representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras
  • Lie algebras and algebraic groups
  • Homotopy theory
  • Category theory

His contributions have left an indelible mark on the field, influencing generations of mathematicians and researchers. We want to celebrate Gabriel's outstanding mathematical work. We encourage all to take part in this conference, in particular young researchers.

  • Date: 25th of August – 29th of August 2025
  • Location: Bielefeld University, Lecture halls TBA
  • Organizers: William Crawley-Boevey, Juan Omar Gomez, Henning Krause, Markus Reineke
  • Scientific advisor: Bernhard Keller

Invited speakers include:

*to be confirmed

Several lectures will discuss some of the seminal contributions of Peter Gabriel:

  • Des catégories abéliennes (Thèse, Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France 90, 1962)
  • Calculus of fractions and homotopy theory (joint with Zisman, Ergebnisse der Mathematik und ihrer Grenzgebiete, Springer, 1967)
  • Algebraic groups (joint with Demazure, Masson & Cie, Éditeurs, Paris; North-Holland Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 1970)
  • Locally presentable categories (joint with Ulmer, Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Vol. 221, Springer, Berlin-New York, 1971)
  • Quiver representations and further developments discussed in Indecomposable representations, II (Symposia Mathematica, Vol. XI, 1973)
  • Finite representation type is open (Proceedings of the International Conference on Representations of Algebras, 1974)
  • Covering theory (joint with Bongartz, Invent. Math. 65, 1981/82)
  • Multiplicative basis theorem (joint with Bautista, Roĭter and Salmerón, Invent. Math. 81, 1985)

Another meeting closely related to the subject of this one will be held in the following week at the University of Cologne: ARTA X .
