DjVu - A Suitable Format for the DML
Report given at : Digital Mathematics Library, DML Planning Meeting, July 29-30, 2002, Washington, DC
National Science Foundation Headquarters, 4201 Wilson Boulevard,
Arlington, Virginia 22230
Examples of DjVu Files 4 (Göttingen)
- The Digitalisierungszentrum of the
Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen
has scanned many volumes of old math literature,
among which is the first volume of Annalen der Mathematik:
They offer PDF files based on 300 dpi scanned images. Download comes in chunks of 50 pages,
probably in order to minimize the server load. This could be achieved, in
a more customer friendly way, by using the DjVu format:
- Math Ann 1, p. 1-47, PDF files from Göttingen (300 dpi):
DjVu : 1445 KByte, 27 KByte/page [ASCII Layer]
PDF : 3859 KByte, 74 KByte/page
- Math Ann 1, p. 48-96, PDF files from Göttingen (300 dpi):
DjVu : 1195 KByte, 23 KByte/page [ASCII Layer]
PDF : 3198 KByte, 63 KByte/page
Remark: DjVu format was achieved by the public DjVu server.
The OCR procedure on this server gives good results
so far only for English text (the server explicitly makes this
remark).
Therefore the ASCII Text is not very good.
This has to be optimized for any language.
Examples of DjVu Files (5)
To view the DjVu files. it is necessary that a DjVu viewer is installed
on your system. This can be downloaded from DjVuLibre (free software).
